Second Chances: Exclusion from School and Equality of Opportunity

This pamphlet explores some of the key issues surrounding exclusions from school. It makes clear that, for many schools, permanent exclusion is a last resort - half of all secondary schools only excluded one or no children in 1995/6. Other issues raised, such as the low proportion of excluded children re-entering mainstream education and the over-representation of Black children in exclusion statistics, add urgency to the government’s drive to reduce the level of exclusions in our schools.
